The Sister Lakes Volunteer Fire Department was notified by the Insurance Service Office (ISO) on May 27, 2014 that they improved their structural fire suppression delivery system from a Class 8B/10 to a Public Protection Classification (PPC) of 7/10.This is a near historic improvement to the community’s fire protection capabilities by being the areas first rural volunteer fire department to lower the Public Protection Classification by standards established by the Insurance Services Office. The new PPC Classification became official on September 01, 2014.

What does the Class 7 ISO rating mean?

ISO is a third party independent agency that collects and evaluates information from communities in the United States on their structure fire suppression capabilities. The data is analyzed using their Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS™) and then a Public Protection Classification (PPC™) number is assigned to the community.  It rates the results on a national scale from one to ten (one being the best and highest). Many insurance companies use PPC information to help establish fair premiums for home and commercial insurance — generally offering lower premiums in communities with better protection. The program provides an objective nationwide standard that helps fire departments plan and budget for facilities, equipment, and training. In addition to securing lower insurance premiums for homeowners, the PPC program provides incentives and rewards for communities that choose to improve their firefighting services.

Benefits of an ISO review?

• Lower home insurance rates
• Increase the safety of the community
• Improve fire department capabilities
• Identify areas for improvement
• Promote economic development

What You Need To Know:

An improvement in the PPC Classification from a 9 to a 7 can have a significant improvement in the insurance premiums that you pay and is a tribute to an improved fire department and water supply system that has been provided by the Sister Lakes Fire Department.  IF you are within the Sister Lakes Fire Protection Area and live within five road miles of the station, THEN you need to contact your insurance company. Fire department research shows that some home owners may need their insurance company to correct their listed fire department.  It is very important that you contact your insurance carrier and work with them to make the necessary corrections in fire department coverage and PPC Classification.
